fourth annual early music singalong:
MadriGals, Chansons and Lieder, oh my!

In what has become a beloved annual tradition, audience members become the choir as Artistic Director Nicole Baker leads the group in a selection of familiar madrigals, chansons and Lieder.  We'll provide the music, you provide your voice!  Dr. Baker will coach singers in a reading of works by Lasso, Gastoldi, Monteverdi, Arcadelt, Gibbons, and Isaac interspersed with notes on performance style and early music history.  Coaching will be followed by a reception for workshop participants. New this year: the Singalong will conclude with a free informal “performance” of the workshop repertoire, open to the public.

Jephte & Beyond: Jewish Stories and Songs from the Renaissance & Early baroque

Giacomo Carissimi’s profoundly beautiful oratorio Jephte, a monument of the early Baroque era, forms the cornerstone of this wide-ranging concert of sacred music exploring stories and texts from the Old Testament.  Choral and instrumental compositions by Salamone Rossi, synagogue music by Louis Saladin and Carlo Grossi, and the well-known psalm setting Beatus vir by Monteverdi, will round out the program.  Indeed, this is Jewish music as you’ve never heard it before!

For this one-of-a-kind event, Jouyssance will be joined by the celebrated soprano Andrea Zomorodian, plus members of Southern California’s exciting new ensemble on the early music scene, Los Angeles Baroque.

This concert is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs.
